Helen Haig
Helen Haig is a native of Southern California who grew up in a family that valued community involvement and service. It was no surprise, then, when her career led her to serve as a Deputy Director of Policy Development in the administration of former California Governor George Deukmejian. Her work included providing leadership in economic development, environmental safety, educational quality, and governmental organization. It included directing the state’s participation in a Federal Rural Economic Development Program with sponsors including The Aspen Institute, Kellogg Foundation, and US Department of Agriculture, with White House (Bush #41) oversight.
Currently, Ms. Haig is the founder and principal of The Haig Group, a company specializing in policy and leadership development, strategic planning, communications, and government relations. She has served clients from a wide range of backgrounds, with projects that have included bridging the gap between technology firms and the general business sector, developing proposals for regional community and elder care resource planning, review and permitting of new technologies, and organization of government departments and programs, among other things. Ms. Haig is a lecturer at college-level political science courses and for civic groups on the policy development process and she is a published author.
Ms. Haig has been honored by a Certificate of Special Congressional Recognition for her “outstanding and invaluable service to the community”. Previously, she received a Certificate of Recognition from the City of Los Angeles in addition to recognition from the California Highway Patrol, and as a “Pioneering Woman in Government” by the West Los Angeles Chamber of Commerce. In the past, she was honored with inclusion in the Policy Academy of the National Governors Association and the National Association of Governors’ Policy Advisers.
Ms. Haig serves on various Boards, including the World Affairs Council of Orange County. She is also a member of the Sacramento Economics Roundtable. In the past, she served as President of the Soroptimists of Sacramento, as a Board member of the Northern California International Visitors Council (a US State Department program), and The Chamber Orchestra of the South Bay.
Ms. Haig earned her BA degree from Occidental College, Phi Beta Kappa, in Theater and Communications, and her MA in Linguistics from UCLA. Hobbies include singing and piano, as well as anything to do with the Arts. She also enjoys folk dance, gardening, and reading.
